Morphogenesis meditates on climate change as the outcome of interactions between humanity, technology and the organic world. The project began with a series of photographs shot on expired film in dense entanglements of vegetation. The images were scanned and printed out as laser copies, then taken apart and rebuilt into collages using archival tape, loosely following the structural principle of the Fibonacci sequence (a mathematical model widely used to simulate plant growth). These collages were then rescanned at very high resolution and a further set of images created from individual selections. Both the collages and the resulting images draw on the principle of biomathematics (the idea that plant growth has a mathematical basis, and that plants can be regarded as ‘living crystals’) to create new, hybrid forms that merge human and vegetal agency.
